NAIDOC Week 2022
7 July 2022
NAIDOC Week (3–10 July) is held annually to celebrate and recognise the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. This year’s theme is ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’, emphasising the need to narrow the gap between aspiration and reality, good intent and outcome.
We asked members of the TRCB team at our Boorloo (Perth) based studio to recommend an event or activity this NAIDOC Week. Here are a few top picks:
Tracks We Share – TRCB Director Fred Chaney recommends this extraordinary celebration of Aboriginal artists and artwork of the Pilbara, which is on show at AGWA until 28 August. The show brings together more than 70 artists and over 190 artworks, offering a rare and broad-reaching insight into the region’s artistic output over the years.
Aboriginal Cultural Awareness and Understanding Workshop presented by Auspire and facilitated by Mr Danny Ford from Kambarang Services – TRCB Architect Sean O’Dea recommends this full-day session, which is expertly facilitated by Mr Danny Ford, a Senior Traditional Owner of Whadjuk Country with connections to the wider Noongar Country.
Galup VR Experience – TRCB Writer and Editor Naama Grey-Smith looks forward to participating in this event, which runs at WA Museum Boola Bardip until 17 July. This intimate truth-telling experience uncovers untold stories of Lake Monger in a new 360 virtual reality film.
You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through NAIDOC activities and events held across the country. For more information on NAIDOC Week and to get involved, please visit the NAIDOC website.
