Vicinity Centres, in a joint venture with Perth Airport, engaged TRCB to design Western Australia’s first DFO Outlet Centre. The resulting retail hub now stands as one of Perth’s premier shopping destinations – a landmark building on a prominent site.
Stretching across approximately 33,000 sqm (24,000 sqm GLA), the DFO shopping complex incorporates over 100 fashion tenancies, a 400-seat casual dining area and multiple external spaces.
The design drew inspiration from ideas of flight, as can be traced in the sweeping lines of the building’s external canopy forms, as well as the layered, exposed structure of the interior arcades.
The retail tenancies are arranged in a ‘racetrack’ formation, with wide, centralised and circular walkways for easy movement and navigation. The extensive length of the mall is balanced by generously proportioned shopfronts – a win brought about by our close collaboration with the client and consultant team.
Natural lighting and interior gardens permeate throughout, especially in the casual dining area at the building’s northern edge. Here, outward-facing food and beverage outlets integrated with a slow-speed street, grassed terraces, a playground and urban furniture establish an animated public space for visitors and locals alike.
